Der Dutchman
About This Spot
Walking into Der Dutchman in Plain City feels like stepping into a warm embrace of tradition and genuine hospitality. The pace is unhurried, inviting guests to sink into the comforting rhythm of a classic family restaurant where generations gather to share simple, satisfying meals. The hum of conversation blends with the soft clatter of dishes from the buffet, while the expansive two-story gift shop offers glimpses of small-town charm and carefully curated treasures that delight as much as the food itself.
Here, the atmosphere is both spacious and intimate. Whether you’re settling in for a leisurely breakfast or a bustling dinner with loved ones, there’s a soothing consistency in how the place welcomes you—like a well-worn quilt stitched with the care of countless shared moments. The aroma drifting from the bakery teases with freshly baked pies and donuts, promising sweet finishes that are as much a part of the experience as the hearty main courses.
The menu mirrors the comforting vibe of the space, presenting familiar American classics with a homestyle touch. Instead of just ordering a meal, diners find themselves drawn into an experience where each bite tells a quiet story—whether it’s the tender broasted chicken resting beside creamy mac and cheese or a generous slice of pecan or pumpkin pie that conjures memories of fall afternoons. The buffet’s well-stocked offerings encourage a relaxed exploration of flavors, where wholesome soups and family-sized portions invite sharing and lingering conversation.
More than a restaurant, Der Dutchman feels like a place that holds space for meaningful human moments—where the blend of good food, welcoming smiles, and thoughtful details makes each visit something to come back for. It’s a spot that quietly honors local roots while making every guest feel like part of a larger family gathering.

My first visit to Der Dutchman was truly an eye-opening experience. I had never heard of this restaurant before attending a family dinner party here, and I was completely taken aback by how impressive the entire place was. The building is enormous, featuring a two-story gift shop filled with unique items, as well as a full bakery offering freshly made pies, fudge, donuts, and even fresh-brewed coffee. They clearly spare no expense when it comes to creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for their guests. When our party of 30 was called to be seated, I was genuinely impressed with how well the dining area was arranged. Even though our tables couldn’t be fully combined, the staff went above and beyond to ensure we were seated close enough to talk, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company comfortably. The service was excellent—our waitresses were friendly, attentive, and quick to take our orders and bring our drinks so we could start enjoying our meals right away. The food selection was outstanding. There was a wide variety of options to choose from, including a full salad bar and two additional buffet bars offering an assortment of entrées, sides, and desserts. Everything looked fresh, plentiful, and thoughtfully prepared. Overall, Der Dutchman exceeded all expectations. From the atmosphere to the service to the incredible range of food, this restaurant delivered an exceptional dining experience. I highly recommend it and will definitely be returning!

Der Dutchman provided another great experience today. Server very good. Large buffet line was clean and well stocked. Buffet had their famous chicken, ham, roast beef, and pork for meat selections. Large salad bar. If you’re reading this review, please hit the “Like” button.

Enjoyed a peaceful night's rest through their Harvest Hosts Program. Woke up and stocked up on many delicacies and a few baked goods. Definitely a must stop for everyone traveling through Plain City!

I love Der Dutchman. I've eaten in when visiting before and their food is always delicious; I love the buffet. My favorite thing to do, though, is to just pick up baked goods at their bakery. Their donuts are some of the best donuts I've ever tasted! They are also very large relative to a lot of donuts, so you get a good amount for what you're spending.

Such an amazing place. Either order off menu or hit the buffet out. Try the pie, its a 1/4th looking size. Finally on the way out, check out their 2 floor gift shop. They are closed on Sundays.

Great place. I usually have the fried chicken but everything is good. Stay away from the bakery because I can never leave without a bag of goodies. Cookies, rolls, jam, etc. it’s all good. My wife loves the liver.
